Artist Statement
I'm drawn to the ephemeral quality of old newspapers, discarded letters,
cards, paper and the remains of outdated technology and mechanisms.
Individually, these remnants of the past may appear random and out of
context, but when printed and layered together, a kind of alchemy occurs.
Patterns begin to emerge, new connections are created hinting at a greater
whole and at the same time these remnants emerge as reminders of the
impermanent nature of this world and our place in it.
My works are intended to encourage contemplation and a deeper sense of
connection to the world and to each other. To make this meditative purpose
clear, I combine elements which take on spiritual meaning, such as
electrical diagrams that echo mandalas, and incorporate objects that already
have spiritual significance such as Hebrew prayers, images from Jewish
mysticism or Chinese ancestor money. These devotional references may seem
arcane, but they can be understood as invitations to personal reflection,
ultimately pointing towards a sense of what is lasting, absolute and real in
this life.
